Downtown Community Centre

Downtown Community Centre

Located in the former St. Mary’s High School the new Downtown Community Centre, opened in 2005, is serving the recreational needs of thousands of culturally diverse Kitchener residents, while also serving as the headquarters for the Waterloo Catholic District School Board’s administrative offices.

This new $3 million community centre was the result of a unique partnership between the City of Kitchener, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, St. Mary's Parish and six downtown area neighbourhood associations (DNA - Downtown Neighbourhood Alliance). The City of Kitchener contributed $1.7 million from its $110 million Economic Development Investment Fund to the Downtown Community Centre project.

A unique facility that is helping to meet the recreation and leisure needs of the downtown community, the Downtown Community Centre provides a combination of direct programming offered by the City (including the Adults 50+ programs/services), summer playgrounds and programming by neighbourhood associations for downtown residents and employees, children and youth.

The Downtown Community Centre includes games, crafts, preschool and multipurpose rooms, a double gym, a tuck shop and a commercial kitchen where the "Old Vic" meal program continues to serve fresh home-made noon-time meals Monday to Saturday. St. Mary's Parish also has access to the Parish Hall, and the Downtown Neighourhood Alliance has office and programming space in the centre.
