Centre for Family Medicine

The Centre for Family Medicine is leading the way in changing the way health care is delivered in Waterloo Region. The new medical facility, which combines patient care with teaching and research in family medicine, has opened temporarily in the former Victoria School Centre facility on Joseph Street.

The centre shares its new quarters with an optometry clinic, run by UW, and the International Pharmacy Graduate Program, run by the University of Toronto in conjunction with the University of Waterloo

Eventually, the Centre for Family Medicine will become a tenant on the new UW School of Pharmacy campus that is slated to open at the corner of King and Victoria Streets in January 2008. The UW Optometry Clinic and the university’s International Pharmacy Graduate Program will also move to the School of Pharmacy campus in the future.

The Centre for Family Medicine brings together six local family physicians that offer health-care services utilizing a dynamic Family Health Team approach, to help meet the local demand for family doctors.

The centre is among the first of 53 new Family Health Teams in the province – and among three in Waterloo Region. Family Health Teams include doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and other health-care professionals working together to provide comprehensive care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

As well, doctors at the Centre for Family Medicine are developing teaching programs for medical students and medical residents, from both McMaster University in Hamilton and the University of Western Ontario in London, many of whom will train at local hospitals.
