New Provincial Courthouse

Courthouse drawingThe Province of Ontario recently committed to building a new provincial courthouse in eastern end of downtown Kitchener, on the block bordered by Frederick, Duke, Scott and Weber streets. The courthouse will consolidate three of the provinces regional court facilities into the new downtown building and is expected to attract new jobs to the core for the courthouse itself and for associated businesses such as law firms.

The announcement represents another significant step in the growth, re-energization and positive momentum that the downtown is experiencing.

The City of Kitchener has been fortunate to enjoy a long tradition of being home to the area's judicial system. The city was home to the first courthouse - the Waterloo County Courthouse - which was built in the mid-1800s. This new courthouse not only carries on that important piece of the city's heritage, but it also supports the thriving legal cluster that makes its home in that area of the downtown.

Construction on the courthouse will begin in 2010.
