Jannell Lo DTK Staycation
Local DTK chef and cookbook author Jannell Lo (@mybfisgf) and her husband Reid took part in our DTK staycation series. They enjoyed a well-needed day of strolling through Downtown Kitchener, visiting their fav local spots that are back in biz. Here is their DTK staycation: gluten-free edition, in her own words...
Breakfast is usually the huevos rancheros at Pupuseria Latino, but since they were closed for the week, we headed up the street on Eby to everyone’s fav spot, The Yeti Cafe, where we started the day with coffees and delicious breakfast sandwiches (the pregnant cowgirl and brunchie are their go-to’s, Reid ordered his on a gf bagel)
Then we strolled down King, picked up a few cooling juices at Good Vibes Juice Co and popped into our favourite plant shop around the corner, Living Fresh for some cute greeting cards for friends still getting married in 2020!
After a visit with friends’ in our downtown backyard and a stroll around Vic Park, we stopped for a satisfying tuna and peach tartare and a gluten free oyster po’ boy Wooden Boat (shoutout to King East chef @chefthompsontran).
We ended our mini food tour with a flaming crab rangoon and lettuce wraps Grand Surf Lounge - a tiki bar with some of their fav bites in the city. Chef Alex makes a special effort to ensure that dishes that can be made gluten-free (those that use soy and other sneaky ingredients) are in fact gluten-free (substituted with easy switches)
Bonus - for those craving #coffeeandcigarettes (the cocktail from their sister restaurant Grand Trunk Saloon, Grand Surf Lounge is serving it on their back patio during the summer months.
