No long-term lease. Just an opportunity to bring your brand downtown.

Each spring and during the holiday shopping season, Square Peg transforms into a shared retail experience where emerging retailers can set up shop for one week, showcase their products, connect with customers, and gain valuable storefront experience alongside other local brands.

Retail Incubation

Square Peg is designed to help entrepreneurs, makers, independent retailers, and growing brands test products, connect with customers, and build their business in a real storefront environment.

Located at 220 King Street West, beside Kitchener City Hall, Square Peg offers a high-visibility retail space where businesses can gain valuable market insights, strengthen their brand, and experience brick-and-mortar retail without the long-term commitment of a commercial lease.

Eligibility

To participate in the Square Peg Retail Incubator, retailers must complete the following before taking over the space:

Submit a completed Square Peg application
Obtain a Pop-Up License
Provide proof of liability insurance (typically between $200-$500 per month)
Review and sign the Square Peg Terms & Conditions
Pay all applicable program fees

Tenant Responsibilities

Retailers selected for Square Peg are expected to:

Commit to a one-month storefront takeover
Operate a minimum of five days per week
Be open at least six hours per day
Provide their own staffing for daily operations
Merchandise products and maintain the storefront throughout the program
Comply with all permits, policies, and program requirements

FAQs

1. Where can shoppers park?

Customers of Sq. Peg has several parking options in DTK.

FREE Parking

There are more than 300 free two-hour on-street parking spaces in downtown Kitchener.
Free 15-minute parking pickup locations on King Street
Free parking after 5 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday in municipal surface parking lots

2. Does Square Peg have Wi-Fi?

Yes! Wi-fi access will be granted upon move-in.

3. What fees are there for using the space?

Daily rental rates are $17.56 per day or $500+HST per month. Payment is due before move-in. Credit and debit are accepted, and fees can be paid in person or online.
Pop-up Licenses have a fee of $138.00. Application and fee payment are processed online.

4. Can I sell food?

Yes, the sale of pre-packaged food is permissible if goods are produced in a Public Health inspected kitchen, but cooking or preparing food on-site is strictly prohibited.

5. Can I sell or serve alcohol?

Alcohol is permitted only with the appropriate licensing. If your opening ceremony or event involves alcohol, you must secure the necessary permits prior to the event. For more information, contact licencing@kitchener.ca.

6. Can I host events?

Yes, events are permissible, so long at the required permits are obtained, terms and conditions are adhered to, and the capacity of the pop-up shop (30 ppl) is respected.

Step 1: Review the Square Peg Retailer Guide
Learn about the space, eligibility requirements, operating expectations, and what to expect during your residency.

Step 2: Submit Your Expression of Interest
Email the Downtown Development Team with information about your business, products, and retail goals.

Step 3: Complete the Application
Once we receive your expression of interest, our team will review your business and send you the Square Peg application form.

Step 4: Launch Your Store
Successful applicants will work with the Downtown Development Team to schedule their residency and prepare for their retail experience in Downtown Kitchener.

This Month at Square Peg

Discover a collection of original artwork, apparel, prints, books and more as local artist Trevor Clare transforms Square Peg into a gallery, shop and community gathering space. Visitors can explore new and existing works, find unique holiday gifts, and connect directly with the artist in the heart of Downtown Kitchener.

In addition to shopping and exhibitions, Trevor Clare will host special community events, including Speed Puzzling and Local Trivia nights. Whether you're looking for one-of-a-kind gifts or a creative downtown experience, this limited-time pop-up is worth a visit!
